Trapping Asian Hornets: Yes, But Not Just Any Way!
The Asian hornet is a real scourge for biodiversity. It attacks bees, endangers apiaries, and threatens the balance of our ecosystems. Faced with this danger, trapping is an effective solution, but it is still necessary to use suitable and selective traps!

“Homemade” traps: A danger to biodiversity
Many individuals make their own hornet traps using cut plastic bottles filled with a sugary mixture. The problem: these traps capture many useful insects, such as bees, butterflies, and ladybugs.
Poor trapping can do more harm than good, by unbalancing the ecosystem and further weakening pollinator populations already in danger.
The EVENA selective hornet trap: A responsible alternative
Our trap has been designed to effectively trap Asian hornets while allowing other insects to escape:
✅ Intelligent outer grids : These allow Asian hornets to enter the trap while providing other insects with an exit.
✅ A protective grid in the collection tray : This prevents insects from falling into the liquid attractant, a crucial point for pollinators. Indeed, contact with the liquid can damage their wings and prevent them from flying.
✅ Reasoned trapping : To date, no attractant exclusively attracts Asian hornets. However, thanks to its design, the EVENA trap limits the capture of useful insects, offering them a chance to escape.
How to use the EVENA trap correctly?
1. Choose your attractant carefully
The Asian hornet is attracted to sweetness. You can use:
🔹 Commercial baits
🔹 1/3 beer – 1/3 white wine – 1/3 syrup
🔹 30% water – 70% sugar
2. Place your trap in the right location
📍 One trap every 350 meters provides effective coverage.
📍 Install it at 0.50 m – 1.50 m in height, in the sun in the morning and in the shade in the afternoon.
📍 Favor locations near beehives, orchards, or hornet passage points.
3. Maintain your trap for maximum effectiveness
🔄 Renew the attractant every 8-10 days (every 3-4 days during hot weather).
❌ Do not wash the trap ! Trapped hornets release pheromones that attract their congeners.
🌦️ Adjust the renewal of the bait according to the weather : there's no point in wasting an attractant if it rains for several days in a row.
