Bird lovers know it well: feeding our feathered friends is an important gesture, especially in winter. But did you know that not all food balls are created equal? There are two main types: fat balls and seed balls. Here's what differentiates them and how to use them optimally.

Fat balls: an intense energy boost

Traditionally, fat balls were the only ones available on the market. Very rich in lipids, they are a valuable source of energy for birds, especially in winter when temperatures drop and natural resources become scarce.

    When to use them?
Fat balls are ideal during periods of severe cold. They allow birds to maintain their body temperature and survive in difficult conditions.

    Seed balls: a lighter alternative

Over time, habits have changed: some people started offering fat balls all year round. But this practice is not always beneficial for birds, especially in spring and summer, when their nutritional needs are different.

It was to meet this need that seed balls were created. Less rich in fat, they are more suitable for periods when birds have fewer energy needs, but where a small dietary supplement can still be useful.

    When to prioritize them?
Seed balls are perfect for milder periods, such as spring, summer, and early autumn. They avoid excess fat, while providing a suitable nutritional mix.

    Why adapt bird feeding?

Birds have specific needs depending on the seasons. Offering them an adapted diet contributes to their health and well-being. In winter, they need energy to fight the cold, hence the benefit of fat balls. On the other hand, during breeding season or when they can easily find resources in nature, a diet that is too rich can harm them.
